Welcome to the 2019 Western Canada Innovation & Entrepreneurship Roadshow Opening Ceremony presented by Canada China Commercial Association
CCCA is going to launch the Roadshow program in 2019, which is the third year of this well received program.

Venue: Central Library Performance HallBuilding up on the success of 2017 and 2018, the CCCA Roadshow program will be further enhanced through our partnership with Innovate Calgary, Startup Calgary, Seedups Canada, Haskayne School of Business and other local leading organizations in the innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) industry. With such a strong partnership, CCCA will offer more diversified business resources to the participating ventures. For the Roadshow opening ceremony, CCCA has invited guests from local and international innovation and entrepreneurship industry, with strong business, investment, industrial background.
Keynote:
Dr. Liming Liu
Dr. Liming Liu is the VP Surface Technology at Value Creation Inc. (VCI) since 2013. He has over 20 years of research and development experience in the oil industry. Since 2000, he plays a leading role in the development of VCI’s proprietary technologies. He served Sinopec, China in the 90s. Dr. Liu obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from East China University of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2000.
James Szarko
James Szarko serves as the Chief Executive Officer and President at Botaneco. His primary focus over the past 15 years has been that of leadership roles with companies which have a proprietary technology focusing on commercialization and growth. Involved as an investor, advisor, executive and board member, James has run the gamut of entrepreneurialism. James served as Chief Executive Officer, President and Director at SemBioSys Genetics Inc. He received his initial training with PricewaterhouseCoopers wherein he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation. This training also included an extended management posting in a developing market. James also possesses a business degree from the University of Lethbridge.

Sylvain Defoy
SRED (or SR&ED) refers to the Canadian Government's "Scientific Research and Experimental Development" program. This is a generous incentive program that rewards companies of any size for conducting Research and Development activities in Canada.
Sylvain has been involved in many consulting special assignments as an in-house specialist in different government incentives and successfully helped corporations accessing different grants to support their investment in specific areas such as advanced technology project, export market business expansion, job creations etc.
Jordan Martel, CBV
Partner of Sequeira Partners
Jordan has over 15 years of advisory experience providing business and asset valuations to support transactions, financial opinions, tax and financial reporting, corporate planning, and other advisory services for private and public companies primarily in the energy, chemical, and other heavy industries.
Prior to joining Sequeira Partners, Jordan was a senior manager in Deloitte’s valuations group holding a number of leadership roles in the Alberta and Prairie markets. Jordan also held a management role in the valuation practice of an international middle market investment bank in Dallas, Texas. He holds an MBA from the University of Texas, is a Chartered Business Valuator and a Senior Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers in business valuation.

Morgan is an Innovation Manager, Medical & Life Sciences, at Innovate Calgary. She works with University of Calgary researchers to manage intellectual property and commercialization of new discoveries in agricultural and life sciences.

Pitching Skill Training for Entrepreneurs
Dr. Oleksiy Osiyevskyy
Dr. Oleksiy Osiyevskyy is an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. In his scholarship, Oleksiy concentrates on the problem of achieving and sustaining firm growth through successfully engaging in entrepreneurial strategies. Particular areas of expertise include analyzing and designing innovative business models, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of corporate innovation practices, and evidence-based strategies for developing high-growth new ventures.
Dr. Osiyevskyy’s scholarly achievements were recognized with the prestigious Canadian Izaak Killam Memorial Scholarship (during his Ph.D. studies), and numerous awards from the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Moreover, his research was included in the list of ‘research projects taking place at Canadian universities that teach important lessons for today's business leaders' by the Canadian Business Magazine. Before joining Haskayne School of Business, he was an Assistant Professor in the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Group of the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, Northeastern University (Boston), from 2014 till 2017.

We invite George Tai, partner of Denton's Canada LLP to share his knowledge and insights on equity structure for early stage businesses.
About the Speaker:
George’s practice centers on Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities, Corporate Finance and Corporate/commercial transactions, primarily in the energy and technology sectors. George also has extensive experience advising technology companies having successfully negotiated complex licensing contracts, service agreements and software development agreements domestically and internationally with numerous multinational original equipment manufacturers, telecommunications companies and software companies.
George has experience in structuring and negotiating international commercial transactions, advising a number of Canadian-based clients on transactions in Asia, and with Asian-based clients pursuing investments and business opportunities in Canada. George is the co-lead of Dentons' Canada's China Services Desk.
George has served as a director and a corporate secretary on a number of TSX and TSXV listed oil and gas companies and technology companies.

2019 marks the third year of the CCCA Roadshow program. Our program aims to promote early stage entrepreneurs with innovative technology advancements and business models. Every year, our program offers a series of seminars focusing on various topics to get the entrepreneurs ready to showcase their business ideas and to connect with the investment community. We finish each year’s program with a pitching competition.
In 2019, CCCA partnered with Innovate Calgary, Startup Calgary, Seedups Canada, Haskayne School of Business and other local leading organizations in the innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) industry. From April to August, We organized 5 seminars with the topics of business plans, business valuation, the government funding program SR&ED, intellectual property, pitching skills, and equity structure.
Thanks to the support from the CCCA community partner, Denton’s Calgary Office and all the generous sponsors, 2019 Roadshow has continued to be a success in supporting local ventures. We will present the 2019 Western Canada Innovation & Entrepreneurship Roadshow Finale on October 18, 2019.
The final four teams to pitch at the finale are:
- Nimble Science Ltd – An innovated device for small intestine MicroBiome Aspiration
- Momentum Material Corporation – Nano-engineered membranes for advanced water treatment systems
- Western Heritage – Online platform for data processing based on remote sensing images, drones, and IoT sensors
- Elsius Biomedical – Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation device, a very complex technology that takes a patient’s blood from its body and in -real-time adds oxygen to it while pumping it back into the system
